• For historical fiction and non-fiction we publish for both children and adults. For early years, we’re looking for books aimed at readers between zero and ten.
• If you’re unsure about word count, there’s no need to email or call to check first — we do read everything that’s submitted. That said, for non-fiction and picture book pieces that come in over our limit are less likely to be selected than those within it. If we did fall in love with a longer submission, it would still need editing down to under 2,500 words for publication. Our preference is 2,000–2,500 words. Fiction length can be variable but again, our preference is for between 2,500-3,000 words.
• Please send manuscripts as a PDF or a Word/Rich Text document. We’re not able to read submissions shared via external links (including websites or Dropbox links).
• Formatting-wise, double line spacing and a clear, readable font really helps. Please keep the text flowing naturally across pages (rather than placing one sentence or stanza per page). And as a small favour to our eyes — please avoid writing the whole piece in ALL CAPS!
• We don’t accept poetry since this doesn’t work for our type of books but also when selling translation rights.
• Maximum file size: 5MB.
• Please don’t include illustrations unless you’re submitting as an author-illustrator. If that’s you, do let us know whether you’d be happy for us to consider the text on its own. A lot of people assume picture-book submissions must include artwork — they don’t. Finding the right illustrator is part of what we do, so we usually prefer to read text-only submissions (unless you also illustrate).
• In the subject line of your email, please include your name and the title of your manuscript.
• We accept submissions by email only. Unfortunately, we can’t consider postal submissions.
